The Foundation
Built on a Professional Standard
FC Shakhtar has built one of Eastern Europe’s most respected youth development systems over more than 25 years. Shakhtar Academy Toronto does not run a local interpretation of that methodology β it runs the same system, adapted for every age group, in every training session here in the GTA.
Every element of how we train, coach, and develop players is rooted in official FC Shakhtar Academy materials: the game philosophy, the player profile, the coach’s role, the training principles, and the moral values that define what it means to be part of this club.
This is the same methodology applied in Shakhtar Academy schools worldwide. The same standard. The same philosophy. The same identity.
Every child, for us, is a potentially great player. We teach through play, interesting challenges, and a safe environment. Progress over results. That is the Shakhtar way.

Technical Foundation
How We Build Technical Skills at Every Training Session
Technical foundation is the base without which nothing else works. A player who is not comfortable with the ball cannot think about the game. A player who hesitates with the first touch cannot execute a decision quickly enough to matter.
This is why every session at Shakhtar Academy Toronto β regardless of age group β includes systematic work on the technical elements defined in the official Shakhtar Academy coaching materials.
The four components of the technical base are developed in parallel. They are not isolated skills β they are connected. A strong first touch enables faster decisions. Control under pressure enables creativity. Both feet create options that single-footed players simply do not have.
01
Ball Control
Confident processing of the ball in any situation β moving, under pressure, in tight space, from a difficult pass. The ball should feel like an extension of the player’s foot, not something they have to focus entirely on handling.
Coach cue: “soft touches β let the ball roll, not bounce”
02
Both Feet β Equal Use
Equal use of the right and left foot. This is a non-negotiable priority of the Shakhtar Academy
methodology. Players who can only use one foot are limited before they even start. We train both feet from the youngest age groups.
Methodology note: “Ignoring the weaker foot is one of the most common mistakes to avoid”
03
Playing Under Pressure
Maintaining technical quality in conditions of pressing β when an opponent is close, when time is
short, when the situation is uncomfortable. Players who can only perform on a clear field cannot play real football.
Coach cue: “eyes up before and after the first touch”
04
First Touch
The quality of the first touch determines the quality of the next action. A poor first touch eliminates options, creates pressure, and forces reactive play. A clean first touch opens the game β towards free space, towards the right decision, towards the next movement.
Coach cue: “first touch β into the free space, not under yourself”

Moral Qualities
The Values We Develop in Every Player
The Shakhtar Academy methodology defines four core moral qualities that are developed alongside technical ones. These are not abstract values β they are part of how we communicate, how we coach, and how we build the training environment every day.
Discipline
Showing up ready. Respecting the structure of training. Following through. Discipline is not punishment β it is the daily habit that makes improvement possible.
Respect
For the ball, the coach, the teammate, the opponent, the rules, and the effort required to improve. Respect is the foundation of the training environment.
Team
We have no indifferent players. We do not give up. We build a mentality of unity, shared responsibility, and collective progress β from the first session.
Dedication
Carrying the values of the club with pride. Representing the Academy on and off the field.
Dedication is not demanded β it is built through the environment we create.
The Role of the Coach
How Our Coaches Develop Players
at Shakhtar Academy Toronto
At Shakhtar Academy Toronto, the coach is not someone who gives instructions and watches. The coach creates the environment β a place where children feel safe to try, supported when they fail, and motivated to grow.
Belief in the Player
Every child, for us, is a potentially great player. The coach carries this belief into every session β
it shapes how they speak, how they correct, how they encourage. Without belief, development is impossible.
Character Formation
The coach builds players who carry the name of the club with dignity. Discipline, respect, team spirit β not as rules imposed from outside, but as habits formed through the daily training environment.
Technical Foundation
Systematic work with the ball. Priority is always player development β every session serves a specific purpose within a coherent long-term plan built on
official Shakhtar Academy methodology.
The Gateway to the Academy
Open communication between the local Academy and the broader FC Shakhtar system. The coach is the first person on the player’s pathway β and must act accordingly.
A coach is not someone who tells players what to do. It is someone who makes them think.
Johan Cruyff
At Shakhtar Academy Toronto, the coach is not someone who gives instructions and watches. The coach creates the environment β a place where children feel safe to try, supported when they fail, and motivated to grow.
Lead by example. Speak briefly and positively. Maintain a safe and energetic pace. Praise effort and decision-making β not only goals. Correct mistakes individually, quickly, and constructively. Communicate during play: “I saw the opening β great! Now look before you receive.”
The Shakhtar Academy coaching approach is defined by four expectations β from the official methodology:
- Player development is the priority β always, in every session
- Systematic work with the ball β not drills, but purposeful development
- Open communication β with the Academy, with parents, with players
- Positive environment β safe to try, safe to fail, safe to grow
Our Standards
Five Coaching Mistakes
We Never Make
The Shakhtar Academy Methodology identifies five common mistakes in youth football that must be avoided. These are not our opinions β they are documented in the official FC Shakhtar coaching materials, drawn from 25+ years of professional Academy experience.
Early Focus on Results
Winning at age 7 teaches nothing sustainable. We prioritise the quality of the process β results follow naturally at the right stage.
Ignoring the Weaker Foot
Equal use of both feet is a non-negotiable
foundation. We train both feet from the very first session β not as a bonus, but as a baseline.
Too Many Commands
A coach who constantly shouts instructions prevents children from learning to think. We show, keep explanations brief, and let the game teach.
Comparing Players
Every child develops at their own pace. We set individual goals β never “be more like your teammate.” Confidence grows from personal progress.
No Feedback to Players
Players need to understand what they are working on and why. No feedback means no direction. We build a clear feedback culture in every session.
Age-Adapted Development
Youth Soccer Training by Age Group: 3 to 15
The same three pillars and four player qualitiesapply at every age β but how they are trained changes significantly. A three-year-old, a seven-year-old, and a thirteen-year-old should not train in the same way.
